Roofing Calculator
Calculate roofing materials: shingles, underlayment, and ridge caps needed. Accounts for roof pitch and waste factor.
About the Roofing Calculator
A roofing calculator estimates the number of roofing squares, shingles, underlayment, and ridge cap needed for a roof replacement or new construction project based on the roof's dimensions and pitch. One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface area — the standard unit for all roofing materials. Accurate material estimation prevents two expensive problems: ordering too little stops the job and forces a partial re-order, while ordering too much wastes thousands of dollars on excess shingles. Our free roofing calculator accounts for roof pitch (which makes actual roof surface area larger than the footprint area), hip and ridge adjustments, starter strip requirements, and standard waste factors for cuts, ridges, and hips. It outputs the number of squares needed, the number of shingle bundles (typically 3 bundles per square for standard 3-tab and architectural shingles), underlayment rolls, ice-and-water shield for eaves and valleys, and ridge cap bundles.
Formula
Roof area = Footprint x Pitch factor | Squares = Roof area / 100 | Bundles = Squares x 3 (standard shingles)
How It Works
Step 1: Measure the ground-level footprint area of the house (length x width). Step 2: Multiply by the pitch factor to get actual roof area. Pitch factors: 3/12 pitch = 1.031; 4/12 = 1.054; 5/12 = 1.083; 6/12 = 1.118; 7/12 = 1.158; 8/12 = 1.202; 10/12 = 1.302; 12/12 = 1.414. Step 3: Divide by 100 to get squares. Step 4: Add waste: 10% for simple gable roofs, 15% for hips and complex roofs. Example: 1,800 sq ft footprint at 6/12 pitch: Actual area = 1,800 x 1.118 = 2,012 sq ft. Squares = 2,012 / 100 = 20.12. With 15% waste: 23.14 squares, round up to 24 squares. Bundles: 24 x 3 = 72 bundles. Ridge cap: measure total ridge and hip length in feet, divide by 35 (feet per bundle) for ridge cap bundles.
Tips & Best Practices
- ✓Standard 3-tab shingles and most architectural shingles require 3 bundles per square. Heavy premium shingles (some 50-year architectural grades) require 4 bundles per square — check the manufacturer specification.
- ✓Always order 10-15% more material than calculated: partial bundles cannot typically be returned, so rounding up to the next full bundle is standard practice. Having 1-2 extra bundles for future repairs is valuable.
- ✓Decking inspection: when removing old shingles, inspect the roof decking (plywood or OSB) for rot, soft spots, and nail pops. Budget for decking replacement — typical cost is $80-120 per sheet of 7/16 OSB.
- ✓Ice and water shield: required by code in most northern climates — apply along all eaves (minimum 24 inches past the exterior wall), in all valleys, and around skylights and chimneys. Coverage is typically 200 sq ft per roll.
- ✓Steep slope surcharge: roofs steeper than 7/12 pitch require additional safety equipment, slower installation, and more material waste due to difficulty handling large shingle bundles. Labour cost typically increases 10-30%.
- ✓Underlayment: synthetic underlayment (30-lb equivalent) is sold in 10-square rolls. Calculate underlayment squares the same way as shingles and divide by 10.
- ✓Drip edge: all eaves and rakes need metal drip edge installed before underlayment on eaves, after underlayment on rakes. Measure total eave and rake length in linear feet for ordering.
- ✓Colour selection: lighter coloured shingles reflect more solar heat and can reduce attic temperature by 20-40°F in hot climates. This matters for comfort and AC efficiency in warm regions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate how many shingles I need?
Shingles are sold by the "square" (100 sq ft). Divide your roof area by 100, add 10% for waste. A 2,000 sq ft roof needs ~22 squares.
